The Vision Behind Rethinking Health

by Sherry Syence
Founder & CEO of Rethinking Health

Americans spend nearly $6 trillion a year on healthcare — a record high — yet chronic disease, stress, and mental health challenges are at epidemic levels. This is not happening in a vacuum. Powerful industries invest billions in sophisticated advertising and PR campaigns designed to shape daily behavior, influence cultural norms, and drive consumption — contributing to the very conditions our healthcare system is struggling to manage.

We are bombarded with these campaigns everywhere — on our screens, along our roads, and in the places we live and work. This constant exposure influences how we eat, cope with stress, and make decisions about our health. When the messages we see and hear consistently prioritize convenience, excess, and short-term relief, prevention loses visibility and unhealthy patterns become the norm.

Rethinking Health was created to change this paradigm.

Through multimedia campaigns that spotlight society’s most pressing health issues, Rethinking Health is on a mission to bring unbiased health information into everyday environments and help drive a broader cultural shift.

Our goal is not only to inform and empower, but to reshape what feels normal — and to make conversations about wellbeing more honest and accessible.

We envision a future where messages that support prevention and wellbeing are more visible than the nonstop advertising we see from industries profiting from poor health. Imagine going to a baseball game or concert and instead of being surrounded by ads for junk food, alcohol, and quick-fix solutions, you saw ads that encouraged healthy living. Now imagine those same empowering messages showing up everywhere — on your morning commute, on the billboards you pass, in your social media feed, even in the news you read over coffee.

That’s the future Rethinking Health is working to build — a culture where wellbeing is visible, valued, and supported in everyday life.

Known for her strategic insight, she helps clients build credibility, extend reach, shift perceptions, and move audiences from awareness to action.

Earlier in her career, Sherry worked as a news anchor, reporter, and editor for print and broadcast outlets in Virginia and the Washington metropolitan area. She later supported high-profile national accounts at a leading DC-area advertising agency — experiences that continue to shape her approach to strategic storytelling.

In 2025, Sherry founded Rethinking Health to help reshape the national dialogue around wellbeing and empower people to make more informed choices about their health. She has been engaged in health advocacy and community education for more than two decades. The premature birth of her twins gave this work deeper personal meaning and strengthened her resolve to improve how society supports children’s wellbeing.

Drawing on a career spanning journalism, marketing, advertising, and PR, Sherry has spent decades tackling complex communications challenges. These insights ultimately shaped her conviction that improving health outcomes requires more than new solutions — it requires reexamining the stories and narratives that influence how people understand wellbeing.

A longtime Washingtonian, Sherry now lives in the beautiful mountain country of Western North Carolina. She holds a Bachelor of Science in mass communications (broadcast journalism) from Virginia Commonwealth University.
